As if keeping yourself and family safe and healthy during a pandemic is not enough, many have also had to deal with navigating child care, virtual learning, and work changes. These situations can all add stress to one’s life, and stress can manifest itself physically in many ways, including unconscious teeth grinding and clenching which is known as bruxism.
According to the Mayo Clinic, people who clench or grind their teeth during sleep are more likely to have other sleep disorders, such as snoring and pauses in breathing (sleep apnea).
The cause of bruxism isn’t completely understood but is believed to be caused by a combination of physical, psychological and genetic factors. It is known, however, that increased anxiety or stress is one of the risk factors that can lead to bruxism.
Because bruxism is an unconscious behavior, those who grind or clench their teeth while sleeping do not know they are doing it. If the problem is severe, you may awake with symptoms such as migraines or headaches, jaw pain and discomfort from clenching, and toothaches.
At DaVinci Dentistry, we can help with bruxism. We will discuss treatment options with you, including oral appliances that can be used. Taking part in stress-relieving activities including exercise, meditation, and yoga will help, too. Give us a call today to further discuss. As always, we are happy to treat patients in Southlake, Texas, and surrounding areas.
