What is Invisalign? How does it work?

Invisalign offers a better alternative to traditional metal braces. It is a popular choice for both teens and adults.

Why? It’s almost invisible! Many patients who are over 50 find it difficult to accept the idea of wearing wires and metal brackets. Braces can sometimes be rejected by people who are able to benefit greatly from them. Braces are not “cool”, and we understand why. Braces can make teens look funny or catch food. Adults don’t want their appearance to be that of a teenager when they go to work or for lunch.

Teens shouldn’t be teased about their appearance or have self-esteem problems. Adults shouldn’t be seen as unprofessional, or lose out on career opportunities due to their treatment. Invisalign offers an aesthetic orthodontic system that can straighten teeth for teens and adults.

Clear plastic aligners are used by Invisalign to move your teeth precisely. They are custom-made using the most advanced technology. Each set of aligners has a different shape, which allows for a progression of movement. The aligners are worn for approximately two weeks before you switch to the next set. Your teeth will move more easily because of the rigid interior. The aligners’ outside is soft to the lips and tongue. To aid in the operation of the system, removable buttons can be placed on the front teeth.

What is the average length of an Invisalign treatment?

Orthodontic technology has advanced greatly. Traditional braces can be worn for as long as two years on average. Align Technology from Invisalign can reduce your treatment by half. The majority of cases completed by our Southlake dentist will take approximately 12-18 months. However, the type and extent of your treatment will dictate how long it will take.

What is the process of getting Invisalign?

Our Southlake dentist will see you and your teen to determine if they are a good candidate for invisible aligners.

We’ll either take a series of intraoral images or a set of impressions during your visit. Each method creates a replica of your smile. Photos and x-rays are often taken.

Invisalign specialists will collaborate with local dentists in Southlake to create a customized treatment plan. The process can take several days so we may ask you to come back for another consultation. We will then be able to show you a simulation of how your new smile would look and estimate the length of your treatment.

If you choose to proceed, we will discuss your dental insurance benefits with you and help you make the appropriate financial arrangements. Invisalign will be working directly with our dentist to create your aligners. Once they arrive at our office, we’ll be happy to have them ready for you to pick up.

How to Get Your First Sets Of Aligners

We will need to prepare your teeth before you can pick up your Invisalign tray. You may need to bond certain “buttons” onto your teeth. This is painless and completely painless. It doesn’t even require you to be numbed! The dentist will prepare your teeth and bond a tooth-colored, composite “button”. This will remain in place for the duration of your treatment. Sometimes, we might also need to perform “interproximal” reduction. This is simply a process that allows specific crowded teeth to move more freely.

After your teeth have been cleaned and brushed, we will fit your first tray. We’ll ensure that you are able to insert and remove aligners by yourself before you leave the office.

What to Expect on a Day to Day Basis

The aligners should be worn as frequently as possible. You will only need to take them off to eat, drink, brush your teeth, or floss. Patients should wear their trays for at least 22 hours per day to achieve the best results.

Invisalign Teen uses aligners with a blue compliance indicator. This makes it easy for teens to make sure they are wearing their aligners as much as possible. Sometimes teens need to remind themselves that Invisalign only works if the aligners are worn for a sufficient amount of time.

We will usually send you home with a few aligners that you can use as directed. You will see your dentist periodically throughout your treatment to check your progress and send you back with more aligners.

After you have successfully used all of your aligners, and your teeth are aligned properly, we will remove the buttons. We will also fit you for a retainer to keep your new smile in place. Orthodontics can be a costly investment, both in time and money. It’s crucial to make sure your straight teeth last a lifetime. Vivera Retainers (made by Invisalign), will keep your teeth from shifting back to their original position.
