Discover How Porcelain Veneers Can Improve Your Smile

It is possible to make significant improvements to your appearance through cosmetic dental work. In fact, big changes can be made with a single procedure. Patients who are looking for a means of fixing several issues can enjoy the results from having porcelain veneers placed.

Veneers are wafer-like shells built to imitate the front of teeth. Despite being slim enough to fit on your teeth (with relatively minor preparatory work), veneers are durable enough to withstand the daily wear and tear your teeth are put through. Through veneers, you can hide spacing problems, wear and tear, and misshapen teeth. This is also a popular means of improving your smile’s color, particularly when you have discoloration a whitening treatment can fail to improve.

Your Initial Consultation To Discuss Porcelain Veneers
An initial consultation is necessary before you can have veneers placed. Your dentist will be unable to approve you for treatment until they determine that your teeth will be able to hold veneers. After all, the bonding process is permanent. You will also be checked for any unaddressed problems that call for restorative dental care.

Other Cosmetic Treatment Options
Porcelain veneers offer patients a chance to address several flaws with one cosmetic treatment. Keep in mind, this is not the only cosmetic treatment out there. If you want to do something about stains in your enamel, you can be helped with a professional whitening session, or a teeth whitening treatment you take home from your dentist. Dental bonding can offer a less expensive, less time-consuming way to correct multiple flaws with teeth; however, the material used in dental bonding will be less durable than veneers.

Don’t Let Imperfections Keep You From Smiling

Close up of female mouth. Comparison after teeth whitening

Are you tired of feeling insecure because of your smile? Tired of limiting conversations with friends or coworkers because you worry they’ll notice the imperfections and inconsistencies in your teeth’s size and shape, gaps between them or even deep discoloration? Over time, many people begin to notice imperfections in their smile that can lead to insecurity. Fortunately, cosmetic dentistry makes it possible to address most flaws with wonderful, natural-looking results, so you can do more important things than worry about your smile. You can proudly show it off!

What Imperfections Are Causing Concern?

The first step in devising any treatment plan, cosmetic or otherwise, is to decide what are the exact causes of your concern. Knowing what you would like to achieve can help your dentist create a customized smile makeover. Your dentist will also discuss your budget, and how quickly you are hoping to achieve the results, in order to determine which treatments are right for you.

In some cases, for instance, treatment could be as simple as a take-home whitening treatment that can generally lighten teeth by several shades. In other cases, treatment might involve using composite resin to hide imperfections, or even porcelain veneers to improve uniformity of the smile by correcting inconsistencies in the teeth’s shape or size. For many patients, the best way to achieve their dream smiles is by combining some or several treatments, in order to properly hide imperfections.

A great smile can really help boost your confidence. Whatever your concerns, the staff at DaVinci Dentistry are dedicated to making sure you enjoy the healthiest and most beautiful smile possible. To set up an appointment for yourself or for a family member, call our Southlake, TX dental office today at (817) 251-9333. We are proud to treat patients in Southlake, as well as Grapevine, Colleyville, North Richland Hills, Keller, and the HEB corridor.

When to Consider Dental Implants

Tooth loss of all degrees can diminish your confidence in your appearance, as well as have a long-lasting negative impact on your oral health, jawbone, and facial structures. If you’re ready to rebuild your smile following tooth loss, then it may be the time to consider dental implants.

How Can Implants Benefit You?

The good thing about modern dentistry is that you often have several options to address your concerns. For instance, if you’ve lost one or a few teeth, then a dental bridge can be custom-designed to close the gap in your smile. If you’ve lost several, most, or all of your teeth, then a partial or full denture might be a better option. While modern dental prosthetics offer highly realistic, durable, and effective results, they lack the ability to replace the roots that supported your teeth and helped keep your jawbone healthy.

With the support of an appropriate number of dental implants, which are biocompatible posts that are inserted into the jawbone, a dental crown, partial, or complete denture can do more for your long-term oral health. The prosthetic posts act as replacements for lost teeth roots and offer unmatched support for your restoration, eliminating inconveniences like denture slippage. The implant posts also help preserve the health and integrity of the jawbone by reestablishing stimulation every time you bite and chew. Like natural teeth roots, dental implants invite a healthy supply of nutrients to the jawbone, preventing the jawbone degradation that often follows tooth loss.

If you’ve suffered tooth loss, then consider speaking with DaVinci Dentistry about the many benefits of a dental implant. To schedule a consultation, call DaVinci Dentistry in Southlake, TX at (817) 251-8333. We also serve patients in Grapevine, Colleyville, North Richland Hills, Keller, and the HEB corridor.

Dental Bonding: Things to Consider

Tooth bonding in Southlake, TexasWhen you’ve cracked or chipped a tooth, there’s one immediate, quick and inexpensive option at your disposal: tooth bonding. This procedure, in which we apply a composite resin to the affected tooth, can typically be done in one office visit. It can be a great option for an immediate treatment while you consider other long-term options.

Some downfalls of tooth bonding include:

  • Shorter shelf life – A typical dental bond lasts up to seven years, but long-term options, such as a dental crown, can last several decades.
  • Durability – While composite resin is strong, if you bite down on hard foods without caution, you can chip or break the bond. In some cases, filing it down can fix the issue, but other times the bond will need to be replaced.
  • Staining – Composite resin stains more easily than enamel or porcelain used for crowns or veneers, so coffee, tea and red wine drinkers, watch out! A whitening toothpaste and consistent oral hygiene routine can help limit staining.

When you have cracked or chipped a tooth, calling the DaVinci Dentistry team in Southlake is a great first step toward restoring the appearance and function of your tooth. We’ll first examine the tooth to see if more intensive work, such as a root canal and crown, is required. When it’s not, you may choose from among several options, including dental bonding and veneers in addition to crowns. We’re here to answer any questions you may have about what may be best so that your goals are met and you feel comfortable and satisfied with your smile. Serving Southlake, Keller, Grapevine, Colleyville, North Richland Hills and much of Tarrant County: 817-251-9333.

Dental bonding: Caring for bonded teeth

When you’ve undergone dental bonding, the first person you’ll want to talk to about routine maintenance and care is your cosmetic dentist. Southlake-based DaVinci Dentistry offers dental bonding as part of its services, and our team can talk to you about things to avoid and things you’ll want to do to keep your dental bonding in place for as long as possible.

In general, care for bonded teeth just as you would your natural, nontreated teeth, which means:

  • brush at least twice a day;
  • floss at least once a day;
  • rinse with an antiseptic or mouthwash on a regular basis; and
  • keep up with your dental appointments and cleanings.

Because the composite resin and other dental bonding materials are applied to the surface of the tooth, bonding can be prone to chipping.

This means being mindful of the following potentially damaging behaviors:

  • using your teeth to open objects;
  • chewing ice;
  • biting fingernails; and
  • chewing on pens, pencils and other hard objects.

Another important step in caring for bonded teeth is to pay attention — when biting down feels a bit “off” or you notice rough or jagged edges on your tooth, don’t hesitate to call your cosmetic dentist Southlake team. We’ll examine your teeth to determine the best course of action. Since bonding isn’t a permanent cosmetic option — on average, it can last upwards of 7 years — we may need to perform a new dental bonding treatment. Contact us today with your questions about dental bonding, and we can discuss all considerations with this cosmetic dentistry option: 817-251-9333.

Do dental implants ever need to be replaced?

Mature senior coupleIf you are missing one or more teeth, the decision to get dental implants is likely one you have thought long and hard about, while seriously weighing the benefits and potential downfalls. Among the many questions you may have is how long dental implants last. This is important, as dental implants are both a financial investment and a time commitment; the process from implant placement to final restoration can take several months.

The answer to this question of whether dental implants ever have to be replaced — as is often the case with extensive dental restorations — is it depends.

While some dental implants may need adjustments from time to time, when they are properly placed and dedicated oral hygiene is followed, they can last a lifetime.

When it comes to whether your implant itself will stand the test of time, the most pressing factors include location (the back of the mouth endures more strain from chewing), pre-existing conditions and disease.

What is important to remember is that while the implant itself can last a lifetime, the crown attached to it may need to be replaced every 10 to 15 years or so, depending on wear and tear.

If you have questions about dental implants for the DaVinci Dentistry team, we can take the time to explore whether they are a good fit for you, taking your oral health, surrounding teeth, overall health and many other factors into consideration. Contact us today by calling us at 817-251-9333 or completing our appointment request online. We’re here to help.

Questions to ask before getting dental implants

A dentist and patient have a conversation at the dental chair. Getting one or more dental implants is a decision that can stand to improve your life for the better. While it is considered a cosmetic dentistry procedure, getting a dental implant actually serves to stabilize the bone in your jaw through a process called osseointegration, in which the surrounding bone fuses to the implant. In addition, the dental implant restores the function of natural teeth, allowing you to chew, talk and live life with confidence that your smile is at its best.

While dental implant surgery can be done right at the dentist’s office, it is still a surgical procedure, which means you’ll want to find out some specifics before choosing the dentist or prosthodontist who is the best fit for you.

With this in mind, here are some questions the American College of Prosthodontists recommends you ask during a consultation, whether you’re talking with us here at the DaVinci Dentistry office, or with another dentist.

Dental implant questions

  1. How often do you do this procedure?
  2. How many times have you done this procedure?
  3. What has been your training in this procedure? How long was it? (Weekend course, lecture, 14-20 weeks CE at a dental school, or years of specialty training at an accredited dental school?)
  4. Where were you taught?
  5. Do you take lifelong learning / continuing education credit and if so, when, where, how often and in what area?
  6. What’s the success rate for this procedure for me, and how long will it last?
  7. How long will the procedure take from beginning until I have my permanent teeth?
  8. Will I have to be without teeth for any period of time?
  9. How much will it cost for the entire treatment from start to completion?
  10. How much will it cost for follow-up maintenance of my restoration?
  11. What are alternative treatment options for this procedure?
  12. What training do you have in these alternative options?
  13. May I get my treatment plan in writing?
  14. How do you feel about me getting a second opinion?

At DaVinci Dentistry in Southlake, TX, Dr. Raed Ajouni is an experienced esthetic dentist who has received recognition from the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, and Dr. Khal Ajlouni is a prosthodontist with three years of advanced training in the design, manufacture and fitting of artificial replacements for teeth, including dental implant therapy. What smokers need to know about dental implants

A man holds a lit cigarette in his fingersIf you currently smoke and are contemplating whether dental implants are an option for you, there is good news and bad news.

The bad news is that the failure rate for dental implant patients who are smokers is twice as high as it is for nonsmokers. The good news: The implant failure rate, even for smokers, is just 6.35 percent. This means more than 93 percent of patients who smoke still experience a positive and healthy outcome with their dental implants.

A 2015 study published in the Journal of Dentistry evaluated more than 80,000 dental implant cases to determine the higher implant failure rate of smokers, and an article published in the Journal of Prosthodontic Research, also in 2015, points to the long-term implant success rate. The research also reveals that for smokers, the majority of dental implants that fail do so in the early stages after placement. The primary cause: thicker mucosal tissues, which diminish stability of surgical guide placement.

The success rate of dental implants for smokers may come as a relief to some, considering just 3 to 4 percent of those who try to quit on their own are successful, and 22 percent of those who quit with help from medication and counseling.

But there is always room to change. For many, the investment in dental implants serves as the catalyst they need to make the move toward quitting. For those that struggle, the guidance from a dentist on how maintain oral health will be of prime importance.

Whether or not you smoke, the decision to get dental implants is one that stands to impact your life for the better, but it’s not without potential challenges. At DaVinci Dentistry, Drs. Khal and Raed Ajlouni are well versed in the latest research findings and trends within the profession, so we can offer an informed opinion. If you’re thinking about dental implants, talk to us by calling 817-251-9333, and we can evaluate whether this option is right for you. After dental implant placement: What to do and what not to do

tooth implant, and two molars on white background

Dental implants are one of the fastest growing cosmetic dentistry options available today. And for good reason: In many patients, the titanium post surgically placed in the jaw can last a lifetime. This post replaces the tooth root, and fuses with bone, actually making the jaw stronger than it was before. And implants don’t decay like natural teeth. While the artificial teeth (crowns) may need to be replaced on occasion depending on wear and tear, if all goes well, the same is not true of the implant itself. With this being said, there are some things you can do — and avoid — after your dental implant has been placed that can make quite an impact on its ultimate success or failure.

Here’s a closer look.

Do:

  • Use ice on the cheek near where your implant was placed to reduce swelling.
  • Drink plenty of fluids.
  • Take antibiotics and pain medication as instructed.
  • Talk with us about what oral hygiene tools we recommend (water flossers, interdental brushes, interproximal brushes and antimicrobial rinses may be beneficial, depending on the characteristics of your dental implant placement).

Don’t:

  • Use abrasive products (think toothpaste with baking soda or whitening toothpaste).
  • Eat or drink hot foods or liquids.
  • Attempt to exercise immediately after dental implant placement (throbbing or bleeding can be a common side effect with too much physical activity following this procedure).
  • Attempt to wear any partial or full dentures without first consulting with us. Wearing these too soon can hinder healing.

If you’re considering whether a dental implant is right for you, the Southlake-based DaVinci Dentistry team has the expertise to talk with you about your options and possible outcomes. We serve patients in Tarrant County including Grapevine, Keller, North Richland Hills, Colleyville and H-E-B. You can reach us at 817-251-9333.
