What to Expect from a Dental Implant

How much can you ask from your dental implant? Keep in mind this artificial tooth root is tasked with an important job – helping you regain your complete, functional smile. The implant is surgically implanted into your jawbone. After being set in the area your natural tooth root previously resided (and after a period of healing takes place), your dental restoration can be put in place. With the support of your implant, your restoration is stable and can look like a natural part of your smile. The implant’s presence helps you avoid problems with tooth loss, including help with problems other prosthetic solutions can fail to correct.

How A Dental Implant Protects You From Issues Created By Tooth Loss

One issue people may not be prepared for when they suffer tooth loss is a deterioration of their jawbone. This occurs because the roots of your teeth create stimulation in your jawbone, which supports proper blood flow to your jaw, and ensures necessary nutrients are delivered. In the absence of stimulation, that bone tissue can break down. Only a prosthetic supported with a dental implant can replicate that stimulation, and protect your jaw.

How Will My Smile Look When I Have An Implant?

Because your dentist can supply you with a life-like replacement tooth, you can count on having a smile that looks natural again once you have your tooth loss addressed. Using dental implants to provide prosthetic support helps you to regain function, but you can also see your looks improve. Because implants protect you against losing bone mass in your jaw, you also avoid taking on a “sunken” appearance, an issue for those who suffer tooth loss.

When to Consider Dental Implants

Tooth loss of all degrees can diminish your confidence in your appearance, as well as have a long-lasting negative impact on your oral health, jawbone, and facial structures. If you’re ready to rebuild your smile following tooth loss, then it may be the time to consider dental implants.

How Can Implants Benefit You?

The good thing about modern dentistry is that you often have several options to address your concerns. For instance, if you’ve lost one or a few teeth, then a dental bridge can be custom-designed to close the gap in your smile. If you’ve lost several, most, or all of your teeth, then a partial or full denture might be a better option. While modern dental prosthetics offer highly realistic, durable, and effective results, they lack the ability to replace the roots that supported your teeth and helped keep your jawbone healthy.

With the support of an appropriate number of dental implants, which are biocompatible posts that are inserted into the jawbone, a dental crown, partial, or complete denture can do more for your long-term oral health. The prosthetic posts act as replacements for lost teeth roots and offer unmatched support for your restoration, eliminating inconveniences like denture slippage. The implant posts also help preserve the health and integrity of the jawbone by reestablishing stimulation every time you bite and chew. Like natural teeth roots, dental implants invite a healthy supply of nutrients to the jawbone, preventing the jawbone degradation that often follows tooth loss.

Prosthodontists vs. Cosmetic Dentists

NPAW_2017_Profile_Picture

This week is National Prosthodontics Awareness Week! Ever wondered about the difference between prosthodontists and general, or cosmetic dentists?

Everyone’s heard of the term “cosmetic dentist,” but prosthodontists undergo more rigorous and advanced training to specialize in the restoration of teeth, and they are also fully trained in general dentistry as well. They are recognized as a specialist by the American Dental Association, and as of last year, there were only 3200 prosthodontists in the US, compared to some 170,000 cosmetic, or general dentists.

Some of the services that prosthodontists offer are dental implants, veneers, crowns, bridges, dentures, and jaw treatments for snoring and sleep apnea. These services require a great deal of skill, and we are so happy that our very own Dr. Khal Ajlouni is an award-winning prosthodontist! You can feel secure and comfortable that you are in great hands.

At DaVinci Dentistry, we are here to answer any questions you may have about any of our prosthodontic services. We are conveniently located in Southlake, and serve patients in Grapevine, Colleyville, North Richland Hills, Keller, and the HEB corridor. Call us at 817-251-9333.

3 common questions about dental implants — answered

Dental implants questions When you’re considering whether dental implants may be an option for you, it’s likely to start out with more questions than answers. At DaVinci Dentistry in Southlake, it’s our goal to answer any and all questions you may have about dental implants. We don’t just want your mind to be at ease; we want you to be certain and confident about your decision.

Here’s a closer look at some of the most common questions we receive from patients who are interested in dental implants, as well as some answers that may help as you explore your options.

Q: How much do dental implants cost?

A: This number can vary depending on the type and number of dental implants you receive, as well as any additional procedures that may be required, such as tissue grafting or bone augmentation. Once we conduct our initial exam and get a feel for the teeth that you need to replace, as well as the condition of your jawbone and mouth, we’ll provide you with a detailed treatment plan complete with estimated cost and the number of office visits that will be required. While not all insurance plans cover dental implants, some may offer funds to be used toward your implants that would otherwise have gone to a bridge or dentures.

Q: What are the risks associated with dental implants?

A: While dental implants have shown to be safe, predictable and effective, they’re not completely without risk.

Some complications include:

  • infection;
  • sinus problems;
  • nerve damage (numbness and tingling);
  • damage to other teeth; and
  • implant failure.

Q: Who should perform my dental implant surgery and placement?

A: Oral health professionals from several dental specialties can place your dental implant, as well as general dentists with training, skills and experience in this treatment method. At DaVinci Dentistry in Southlake, both Dr. Raed Ajlouni and Dr. Khal Ajlouni, a prosthodontist, are experienced with placing dental implants; so much so that they train future and current dentists on the entire process.

Contact our office at 817-251-9333 with your dental implant questions, and we look forward to meeting you soon at your next appointment!

Why some dental implants fail

Illustration: Human teeth and dental implant. Dental implants have become one of the most successful and predictable surgeries within dentistry today. They’ve become the go-to method for tooth loss, because unlike dentures and bridges, which address the cosmetic concerns associated with missing teeth, dental implants help restore appearance and also help to maintain bone levels in the jaw. This helps ensure chewing function, facial shape and overall oral health are also maintained.

Despite these benefits, even when diagnosis, treatment planning and implant placement are on par, and when the patient maintains follow-up appointments and oral hygiene, a dental implant can, in rare instances, fail.

Here is a look at some reasons why:

  • Periodontitis – When a patient develops this condition, the tissue around the teeth becomes inflamed, causing gums to shrink and teeth to loosen. For patients with implants, this can contribute to peri-implantitis, which leads to inflammation in the soft tissues surrounding the implant, as well as bone loss.
  • Issues with adjacent natural teeth – If a tooth near the implant site is infected, the infection can travel to the dental implant. If caught early, tooth and implant loss and expensive regenerative repairs might be avoided.
  • Smoking – While dental implant failure rates are still quite low, even among smokers, (approximately 6 percent), those who smoke are twice as likely to experience implant failure than those who do not.

The good news is, that while dental implants have the potential to fail, it does not happen often. Current implant success rates are approximately 98 percent. At DaVinci Dentistry, if you’re considering your options to replace a missing tooth or multiple teeth, we’ll discuss the pros and cons and potential concerns unique to your case. We are located in Southlake, TX, and serve patients throughout much of Tarrant County. You can get your questions answered by requesting an appointment online or by calling 817-251-9333.

Preparing for dental implants

Preparations for dental implants SouthlakeWhen preparing for dental implants, the Southlake team of DaVinci Dentistry has its own set of responsibilities to fulfill, but that doesn’t mean that you, the patient, don’t also have an important role to play in the process.

On our end, we first must complete a comprehensive dental exam, which includes X-rays and models of your face and mouth. From there, we can create a treatment plan. In certain instances, we may need to partner with other dental specialists, such as oral and maxillofacial surgeons and periodontists. In either case, careful precision and attention to every detail is necessary to ensure that we follow each step of your treatment with the end goal in mind: a restored, functional smile.

There are some things you can do to ensure placement of your dental implant or multiple implants goes as smoothly as possible.

These include:

  • Carefully review your customized plan leading up to surgery (this contains instructions on medication changes and dietary restrictions, such as when to stop eating the day before, etc.).
  • Designate a driver to take you home (whether you receive general or local anesthesia, having someone else to operate a motor vehicle is the best bet to ensure your safety).
  • Follow dietary restrictions (soft food is conducive to healing, and if you purchase what you need in advance, you’ll be able to rest and relax following your surgery).

Placing dental implants is not a one-step process. Once adequate healing has occurred after the implant is placed, anther appointment is scheduled, during which a restoration, or crown, is connected to the implant via an abutment. Of course, the partnership doesn’t end there. We’ll establish a recall schedule to ensure your dental implants are functioning as comfortably and naturally as the teeth they are replacing. And whenever you have questions, don’t hesitate to contact us. We’re only a phone call away: 817-251-9333.

3 benefits of dental implants that you may not have considered

Dental implants in Southlake Dental implants are one of the most popular dental treatments available today, and for good reason. While dental implants can be a crucial part of a smile makeover, they are not merely a cosmetic treatment. In the absence of a healthy, natural tooth, a dental implant is the next best option, mainly because of the stability it provides. Dental implants look, feel and function like natural teeth, but that’s not all.

Here are 3 benefits of dental implants that you may not have considered:

  1. Less damaging to surrounding teeth – Alternatives to dental implants, such as tooth-supported bridges, require grinding away the teeth on one or more sides of the missing tooth. Because dental implants aren’t attached to surrounding teeth, but rather are placed in the jawbone at the site of the missing tooth root, your existing teeth need not be modified or impacted.
  2. Increase stability – Did you know that when a section of the jawbone is no longer being used to support a tooth, strength and firmness can deteriorate? Dental implants, on the other hand, don’t just preserve bone; they help stimulate its growth.
  3. Anchor dentures – Patients with no remaining natural teeth who need complete dentures often face challenges with comfort, stability and changing face shape that isn’t experienced by patients with tooth-supported partial dentures. Opting for even just a few dental implants offers patients more stability and support when wearing dentures.

Not everyone is a candidate for dental implants. Many factors must be considered, such as the location of the missing tooth, as well as current oral health and any other medical concerns. At DaVinci Dentistry in Southlake, we’ll discuss your complete health history among other considerations to determine if this treatment option is right for you. Talk to a member of our team by calling 817-251-9333.
