Don’t Rely on a Temporary Crown – Use CEREC Technology

A dental crown is custom-made to fit over your tooth and is designed with the necessary toughness to stay in good condition for many years. Thanks to CEREC technology, which we use in our office, you can have that permanent, custom-made crown prepared and placed over the course of one dental visit. This is just one of the many great benefits of dental crowns made with CEREC technology. This means you will have the full support you need in less time. It also means you will not have to rely on a temporary crown. Patients who are left waiting for their crown to be made in a dental lab are provided with temporary restorations which can be less than ideal. We are proud to offer a restorative dental care solution that gives you the protection you need without making this delay necessary.

Receiving A CEREC Dental Crown

By using CEREC technology, your dentist can use measurements of your tooth to digitally design your crown, produce it in the office, and place it over your tooth. This eliminates any awkward waiting period during your restorative dental treatment. Because the crown is made from ceramic, your restoration will look like your natural tooth.

Making Sure Your Crown Stays In Good Condition

When you exercise good dental care habits, your crown – like your regular teeth – can more easily be kept in good condition. While it is strong enough to handle typical biting and chewing tasks, avoid biting into hard surfaces, as this can lead to potential damage.

The Cosmetic Value of a Dental Crown

Being able to protect a vulnerable tooth is important. Using a dental crown to cover up a problem tooth can allow you to bite and chew comfortably and naturally, and keep you safe from future problems with that tooth. When your dentist provides you with a ceramic crown, it becomes possible to offer restorative dental care that keeps your appearance in good standing. Ceramic crowns can be crafted to match the look of your surrounding teeth, so it does not stand out in your smile. CEREC technology allows your dentist to provide your crown in one visit, making it more cosmetically pleasing, and convenient.

Thanks to CEREC, Your Ceramic Crown Can Be Ready In One Visit
With CEREC technology, everything needed to design, craft, and place your crown is all contained in your dentist’s office. Your appointment will begin with your dentist taking the necessary measurements and performing necessary preparatory work on your tooth. The measurements will allow them to design your crown, and a milling machine in the office will produce it in time for it to be placed during that same visit.

Better Preventive Care Reduces Your Risk For Needing Future Dental Crowns
Your crown may be durable and up to the task of providing you with long-term care for a problem tooth, but prevention will always be preferable to restorative work. If you want to limit your risk for problems, schedule regular dental exams and cleanings. With these recurring appointments, you can take better care to avoid tooth decay. If you do have a problem, you are more likely to have it found and treated sooner, meaning you may need a filling, but not a crown, to address the issue.

Prosthodontists vs. Cosmetic Dentists

NPAW_2017_Profile_Picture

This week is National Prosthodontics Awareness Week! Ever wondered about the difference between prosthodontists and general, or cosmetic dentists?

Everyone’s heard of the term “cosmetic dentist,” but prosthodontists undergo more rigorous and advanced training to specialize in the restoration of teeth, and they are also fully trained in general dentistry as well. They are recognized as a specialist by the American Dental Association, and as of last year, there were only 3200 prosthodontists in the US, compared to some 170,000 cosmetic, or general dentists.

Some of the services that prosthodontists offer are dental implants, veneers, crowns, bridges, dentures, and jaw treatments for snoring and sleep apnea. These services require a great deal of skill, and we are so happy that our very own Dr. Khal Ajlouni is an award-winning prosthodontist! You can feel secure and comfortable that you are in great hands.

At DaVinci Dentistry, we are here to answer any questions you may have about any of our prosthodontic services. We are conveniently located in Southlake, and serve patients in Grapevine, Colleyville, North Richland Hills, Keller, and the HEB corridor. Call us at 817-251-9333.

Dental bridges vs. implants: The right option for you

When you’re missing a tooth, multiple factors may be considered when deciding what treatment option is best for you. As dental implants rise in use and popularity, patients most often find themselves weighing whether this newer technology or dental bridges are the best option for them.

Weighing the options

Dental Bridges in Southlake, Texas

Dental bridge

The main difference between a dental implant and a dental bridge is that a dental implant replaces just the missing tooth. A titanium post is implanted into the jaw and eventually fuses to the jawbone, resulting in a strong, typically permanent solution. A dental bridge, on the other hand, requires the enamel of neighboring teeth to be largely etched away so that crowns may be adhered, connecting both teeth with a “floating” crown in the middle. Most dental bridges last approximately 10 years.

While many are drawn to the concept of dental implants for their protection and durability, they’re not an option in all cases.

Some of the following must be taken into consideration:

  • Time frame of your tooth loss –  If it’s recent, bone levels should still be adequate to support an implant, but if the tooth has been gone for a long time, procedures such as bone grafts may be necessary to account for recession of gums and bone.
  • Condition of neighboring teeth – Will the surrounding teeth need crowns in the future? Do they have large fillings?
  • Cost – Dental bridges can cost less than implants at the outset, but dental implants may never need to be replaced. Whether insurance covers some or all of a dental implant procedure could impact a patient’s decision.

At DaVinci Dentistry in Southlake, brothers Dr. Raed and Khal Ajlouni can guide you through this process. Dr. Raed has substantial experience in cosmetic dentistry, and Dr. Khal is a prosthodontist, specializing in the replacement of missing teeth. Our goal is to give you a healthy, confident smile, and we look forward to meeting you soon. Serving Southlake, Keller, Grapevine, Colleyville, North Richland Hills and much of Tarrant County: 817-251-9333.

How to Care for your Dental Bridge

An illustration of a dental bridge A dental bridge can be a welcome change for many patients who have had to live with the effects of a missing tooth. We have had many patients come through the doors of our Southlake dental practice tell us firsthand: “It’s difficult to speak.” “It’s hard to eat.” “Just biting down is a challenge.”

In these scenarios, a dental bridge can help patients regain not just a missing tooth, but proper bite alignment and face shape. It operates much like its name. It connects adjoining natural teeth with a false tooth. This is done by placing dental crowns on the teeth on either side of the empty space, effectively making them anchors, or abutments, for the false tooth.

When you opt for a dental bridge you are literally investing in the health of your mouth and smile, and as such, you’ll want to do whatever you can to maintain it for as long as possible. A good rule of thumb when caring for your dental bridge is simply to care for it as you would your permanent teeth.

In addition to proper brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, you’ll still want to floss between the anchor teeth and false tooth, and an antiseptic mouthwash can help prevent decay. In some cases, patients find proxy brushes preferable to flossing for cleaning out debris from around the bridge. Following good oral hygiene practices also serves to help maintain your dental bridge by keeping surrounding teeth strong and healthy. After all, they serve as its firm foundation.

At DaVinci Dentistry in Southlake, whether we are preparing your dental bridge, placing your dental implant or even giving you a single dental crown, we’ll provide you with guidance every step of the way. Coming to see us for your regular check-up helps us catch potential problems early, in order to keep you on the right track. Contact us at 817-251-9333.

Crowns and veneers: A stain-proof option?

Stain-resistant veneers and dental crowns in Southlake, TX

Chances are, if you are considering dental crowns or veneers as a cosmetic option to refresh your smile, it’s because your natural teeth are stained or misshapen. If staining is the reason, it’s likely you’ll want to do whatever you can to take care of your new smile, and many patients ask us if teeth treated with crowns or veneers will stain.

As a general rule of thumb, dental crowns — which cover the whole tooth — and veneers — which cover just the surface of the teeth, used to conceal minor imperfections — are stain resistant.

A commonly used material in each is a durable porcelain. The good news is, this material should remain a bright, beautiful white for many years to come. Potential challenges come into play when you consider that the edges of veneers are bonded to teeth with resin, which can be more susceptible to staining. In these situations, we can polish the area to get rid of the stain. Another thing to consider is your natural teeth surrounding a dental crown or veneer. You’ll want to continue to take excellent care of your other teeth so that they will not stain and create a two-tone smile when contrasted with the stain-resistant white of your crowns or veneers.

Dr. Raed Ajlouni at DaVinci Dentistry in Southlake, TX, is an experienced esthetic dentist with recognition from the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, and can answer your questions about whether dental crowns or veneers may be right for you. The first step to your new smile is to contact us at 817-251-9333.
